Get Primitive: a unique system from fodder to paper

If you would like to branch out from your usual routine this simple leaf design project for fall will help you get started by offering some new approaches to use fodder as the backbone of a design system.

Collage fodder is usually just paper scraps used to make familiar shapes or clusters which are then used as decorative elements. A group os set is usually made in one setting and the tucked away for future use. This project uses fodder as inspiration to begin creating an entire structure for a journal or other project, even a commercial project. How far you take it is up to you.

You’ll need your choice of papers to make the basic leaf fodder. You’ll need some drawing tools, base paper, glue and scissors.

Begin by cutting some strips of varying heights. Glue onto a base paper like stripes. Accent each edge with markers. Add any further design with a white gel pen. These aren’t rules, do whatever type of designs you like or add as many mediums as you like. You are basically creating a totem.

Draw leaf shapes onto these stripes and cut apart, don’t forget the center vein. This is your basic fodder.

Using the same papers you used to create the leaf fodder you can the make a larger composition by arranging patterns on a masterboard. You can then use your fodder as a design motif.

You can cut this masterboard apart for use as different ephemera.

If you are pleased with the design you can scan it and print it to make your own papers. You can also sell these digital designs if you desire.

The real time saver is helping you avoid creation frustration. You can use your leftover papers to include in your project or you can also scan these to print more sets of papers. This will give you an entire coordinated set of papers to begin with in addition to ephemera and embellishments of your choice. All you have to do is add the final touches and you have completed a totally unique journal or other project.

Happy paper crafting!
