Matchbook Mini Journal

These cute matchbook-style mini journals are perfect for tiny collages, notes, lists, or art journaling. Their compact size makes them easy to slip into a purse, backpack, or travel bag so you can create anywhere inspiration strikes. The unique fold-over closure mimics a classic matchbook cover and can be secured with staples, stitching, or a decorative eyelet.

For an extra functional touch, add a small envelope inside to store stickers or other ephemera for crafting on the go.

Supplies You’ll Need

Choose a sturdy paper for your journal cover such as card stock, scrapbook paper or watercolor paper. Lightweight copy paper works well for the inside pages.

You’ll also need:

  • Needle and thread for binding
  • Bone folder or burnishing tool
  • Paper trimmer or scissors
  • Stapler or eyelet setter (optional)
  • Decorative elements if desired

Paper Sizes

Cover

Cut 1 piece measuring 3 1/8″ x 6 3/4″

Inside Pages

Cut 6 sheets measuring 3″ x 5 1/2″

Optional Envelope

Cut paper measuring 3 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ to 8″

Scoring the Cover

Score the cover paper at:

3″ 6″

Carefully fold along the score lines and burnish the folds for crisp edges.

Assemble the Journal

Fold the copy paper sheets in half and stack them together to form your page insert. Place the pages inside the cover and sew the binding along the fold using simple pamphlet stitching.

To create the matchbook-style closure, sew about 1/8″ inside the smaller flap so the opposite side can tuck neatly underneath when closed. If needed, trim a tiny amount from the edge to help the closure slide smoothly into place.

Add Decorative Details

Tie extra thread pieces onto the outside binding threads to create a fringe effect. You can also personalize the cover. Each little journal becomes a handmade keepsake that’s both practical and artistic.

These mini journals are wonderful for junk journaling, notes, lists, tiny art projects, or thoughtful handmade gifts.

Happy paper crafting!
