Meditative Art Journal Beginnings

After these many years of delving into journal making I’ve finally begun to discover expressions that feel comfortable and relaxing for me especially when writing isn’t my first choice. When I first tried Willa Wanders painting for relaxation technique I was impressed by how making repetitive simple shapes was so soothing. I got lost in thought and before I knew it I was calm, relaxed and had a truly joyful experience. I had to think a little as I wondered about colors and where to go next on the page but within minutes I was in the flow and I soon filled up page after page in books as I  practiced her color mixing method and tried different mark making and abstract shapes until I found those that helped me express myself at each moment without worrying whether something was perfect or not.

I then wondered how I could apply this newfound experience and add it to an art journal so that I could sit down and reconnect with my watercolor painting as well.

I decided to incorporate some of my stamps from foam stamp making since they are immediate image gratification and I don’t have to think too much just to begin putting something ‘artsy’ on a page. I was first drawn to them as a way to create unique designs that I could use as a stepping stone. I could leave each stamped image as is or begin adding more color and texture around them.

Finally using guided meditation whether from a quote, a book or one of the many meditation books I have I already have a thought or feeling in mind before I begin.

If I use a printed image on the opposite page as I have done in a previous collage journal I also have a ready made color palette to inspire each page as I go. So much easier than starting with two blank pages.

Now that I know a few of the things I want to incorporate into a new journal I have just begun thinking about materials and construction. I am sure I will want to include papers capable of handling water and my desire list keeps growing. Once I decide I’ll begin gathering what I need for a first try.

These last few journals have really helped me focus my  journal making journey to the types and styles I love best so that when I sit down to create I feel comfortable and inspired. These have been so much fun I have just been filling pages in old journals to see what works best and I can’t wait to start my day with a page.

Happy paper crafting!
