What you’ll need:
1″ x 3-4″ fabric strips
paperclips
stapler
glue
string, twine, yarn, ribbon for a knot if desired (your choice)
embellishments, charms, beads, paper beads for dangles (your choice)
needle nosed pliers (for crimping staple tighter if necessary)
Use a paperclip, popsicle stick or dowel for a bead sizing template and wrap your fabric around it to form a cylinder as if making a paper bead. Glue the edge. Remove from your template and slide back onto the longer trombone shape of your paperclip leaving one side uncovered. This will retain the functionality of your paperclip if desired.
Align a string in the center and staple between the outer sides of the paperclip as shown. Add a seed bead or just tie a knot around the staple.
If adding a bead stack dangle you’ll want to attach it to your paperclip end before stapling your fabric bead to your paperclip, or use a jump ring if you prefer to add it after assembly. After stapling you won’t be able to access the bottom.
You can attach other types of dangles after assembly. Some ideas include ceramic shape beads, polymer clay beads, paper beads, charms or tassels. You can make die cut shapes from packaging, glue two pieces together for strength and paint or emboss and ink them.
Shabby fabric paperlip dangles are a great way to add some different texture to a journal, notebook or planner and keeping them functional extends the possibility on how and where to add them to your project. Attach a few to a small new year notebook calendar for gift giving or make a set as stocking stuffer. Fast, easy and fun.
Happy paper crafting!
