Conversation Hearts

These word stamped hearts aren’t just for Valentine’s Day. Scatter them as decor or tuck throughout your journal. Cover the back of scrap watercolor paper with gesso to write a personal thought on the back and tuck into cards. Easy winter craft project.

What you’ll need:

Watercolor paper

Watercolors or inks

Die cutting/embossing machine

Embossing folders

Heart dies

Gesso or acrylic paint (matte)

Stamps

Ink

I used scrap watercolors from old sketchbooks for my base. I began by covering my paper with wet wash watercolor blends and let them dry. I then cut first and embossed second with my die cutting/embossing machine.

I rubbed a thin coat of gesso over each heart with my finger, not worrying about being neat. When the gesso was dry I stamped with a variety of text stamps over the gesso areas trying to just randomly stamp and use only bits and pieces of text. One tip is to stamp on large white areas if you have some so the ink shows up clearly. Some stamps work better than others, you’ll want to ensure it is recognizable as text and not just squiggles.

This technique is good for rescuing failed embossing attempts or water color sketches you likely won’t use for anything else. A true trash to treasure and recycle and reuse.

Happy paper crafting!
