Antique Old Unwanted Photos

Turn your old unwanted or less than perfect photos into journal ephemera or postcards with some acrylic paint and stamping. A few light coats of metallic or glitter paints help hide less desirable areas while letting a focal point shine through. After your paint is completely dry apply some ink stamped text throughout your design and that old unwanted photo is now a trash to treasure keepsake. Try different colors or non metallic acrylic paints too and turn your old photo into a new piece of art.

What you’ll need:

Photos (your choice)

Acrylic paints (your choice)

Brushes and palette

Stamping Ink (permanent might work best)

Stamps

Begin by choosing a focal point or focal area and deciding what areas to obscure. Build up layers using very thin coats of paint. Once you have the desired effect and your unwanted areas are much less noticeable allow to dry completely. Choose an appropriate stamp and ink color and stamp your text or images randomly around your design, especially over areas you’d like to be hidden. Permanent ink might work best if smudging occurs. Try metallic inks too or maybe just writing on top with a gel pen.

When you are finished if there is something you don’t like you can always paint over it and try again. Adding extreme or fine glitter paint over the top adds a a different effect that combines nicely with the metallic paint. You can try pearl paints if desired or mix and match finishes. The paint is translucent enough that it will hide or show the image depending upon the light.

Play around with different paints and images and turn your old unwanted photos into something new with a little paint and some ink.

Happy paper crafting!
