Assorted Paper Spools – Paper Punch Projects

These spools are 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ square and are embellished with a stacked circle paper button charm. They include a thread catcher on the bottom to easily harness the loose end.

The above spools are 2 1/2″ x 5″ rectangles, suitable for holding longer bits of lace or ribbon. Thread catcher can either be top or bottom. One idea to decorate is to add a tab to one side and keep the thread catcher on top for easy color selection.

What you’ll need:

Packaging

Your choice paper (scrapbook or heavier paper can just be doubled and glued for sturdy spools)

Assorted circle paper punches (sizes shown are 5/8″ – 1″ – 1 1/2″) (standard hole paper punch & 1/8″ hole paper punch)

Glue

Ribbon, string, buttons for embellishing if desired.

The measurements for the two sizes of spools demonstrated in the video are:

  • 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ square
  • 2 1/2″ x 5″

If using lightweight paper or digitals glue your paper on each side of your packaging to disguise it.

Learn how to make a template out of packaging material with perfect mirrored sides in the previous paper spool post here….

Trace your half circles onto your cut pieces as shown in the video tutorial and punch. If you desire a thread catcher use your standard paper hole punch and punch in the center of each spool as shown in the video. A snip in the hole creates a handy thread catcher. A decorative corner punch makes them extra pretty but a simple tag corner or rounded corner will suffice.

Follow the instructions on how to make the small circle spools.

Decorate to suit and wind your ribbon, lace or thread and then store in a box with the ribbon facing up for easy color selection. The small circle spools can be used as an embellishment or to store shorter gathered snippets of lace or ribbon. Make a bunch and place in a container for easy reach on your craft table and re-use for easy organizing.

These easy paper spool ideas will help you create pretty packaging or adding a nice touch to a journal or for sending happy mail and they’ll also keep all of your loose ribbons, lace, yarns or threads in perfect order for storage.

Happy paper crafting!
