Paper buttons offer endless possibility for creativity. These embellishments were inspired by eclectic style jeweled brooches. Gather patterned, foiled, embossed or textured paper and make some fun buttons to add custom flair to your paper projects. Keep it jewel themed by adding touches with metallic markers and add a few extra elements like metallic thread, sequins, seed beads or tiny punched shapes, whatever you have that mimics real jewelry. 

Begin by choosing paper and die cutting or punching circles or other shapes. If you don’t have a button themed die cut set don’t worry, you can easily make buttons with a couple of paper punches. Make a template with packaging material and use a real button similar in size to mark your button holes. Don’t forget other button shapes you can make with punches, hearts, flowers, stars, leaves etc.

Use a heart shape die cut or cut a heart by hand from your chosen papers. Rim with a metallic marker if you’d like a border. Save your cutout piece for more paper projects. 

Ensure your buttons display prominently by choosing a busy pattern with more muted pattern buttons on top or vice versa, choose a simple pattern for the heart and ornate patterns for the buttons.

Thread your buttons if desired with thread of your choice, metallic adds a nice touch.

Make your arrangement and take a reference photo.

You can begin with a star of the show center button and then arrange around it. Stagger your button arrangement on your heart and avoid creating a happy face. Choose several sizes and shapes. Odd numbers create a more pleasing composition. Vary your negative space by placing some buttons closer together. After you are pleased with your design glue in place and then add extra elements for filler.

Buttons are so simple to make and this design can easily translate to other themes or projects.
